After nervously carrying a diamond engagement ring around Europe for weeks, Owen Schmidt chose a Barcelona rooftop for his perfect proposal. Lindsey and Owen returned to the candlelit rooftop bar of their hotel to find themselves alone, enjoying a spectacular view of the city after an evening of tapas and sangria. Owen excused himself and dashed back to the hotel room to grab the ring and order two glasses of champagne. When he returned to the rooftop, he got down on one knee and proposed. Lindsey began to cry and called her entire family, who had been waiting excitedly for her call ever since Owen had asked for her parent's permission before the couple left for Europe, a celebratory trip after they took the bar exam in July of 2008.
From the night they met at a social during their orientation at Fordham law school in 2005 to their first date when Owen brought Lindsey a dozen roses and a teddy bear from FAO Schwarz, Owen and Lindsey's connection developed quickly. Owen told Lindsey he loved her on their first weekend getaway in the Hamptons.
While they were dating, the couple often spent weekends in the Hamptons, a welcome respite from the bustle of New York City. The Hamptons became very special to Owen and Lindsey and when the time came, they decided it would be the perfect location for their wedding-- with the feel of a destination wedding but just a short drive from the city. The Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club near Owen's family's Bridgehampton home seemed ideal. It provided a unique beach location as well as beautiful indoor facilities.
Lindsey and Owen had spent months planning their Hamptons wedding. It would take place on the beach in Bridgehampton. They had picked the perfect aisle runners, decided on a seating arrangement and conducted a walk-through of their beach ceremony. But when the couple arrived in Bridgehampton on their wedding day, they found that the entire beach had been washed out by recent storms. Luckily, Lindsey and Owen quickly adjusted their plans and moved the ceremony to the deck, with a beautiful view of the beach, a decision that proved to be better for both the happy couple and their guests.
The most important thing to Owen and Lindsey in planning their wedding was a unique ceremony that left their guests laughing and smiling. The couple decided to include many of their friends and family members and to incorporate traditions from Lindsey's Jewish heritage. Lindsey's grandmother read a traditional Hebrew prayer called the Sh'ma, they participated in the Jewish wine ceremony and Owen stepped on the glass to conclude the ceremony.
The wedding party included ten groomsmen and nine bridesmaids. It was so large that it could not fit under the Chuppa and the line of groomsmen and bridesmaids had to wrap around the fence instead. Lindsey and Owen loved the time they had getting ready with their groomsmen and bridesmaids respectively. The Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club provided separate apartments for Lindsey's bridesmaids who came with a bottle of champagne to toast Lindsey's big day. Having so many friends and family members involved was one of their favorite parts of the day.
After the ceremony Lindsey and Owen had time to unwind with their closest friends and family around a bonfire on the beach. This was a great chance for the couple to relax and reflect on their big day while keeping the party going for their guests with more drinks and make your own s'mores.
